Summer Music Camp
The Ames Children’s Choirs (ACC) program sponsors a one-week summer music camp for boys and girls who have completed Grades 4-8. The first camp was held June 9-13 at the Collegiate United Methodist Church Annex and culminated in a performance of a two-act musical, What a Fine Day!, by noted composer Carolyn Jennings, who attended the performance.
What a Fine Day! is for treble voices, Orff instruments, and piano. It is based on an African folk tale from the Tanzanian island of Ukerewe, just north of the mainland. The tale is adapted and expanded from an English version by Charlotte (Shoonie) Donhowe Hartwig, who lived in Tanzania for many years. Joseph Mbele, a faculty member in the English Department at St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota, provided additional insights to the folk tale. He is a Tanzanian by birth and a folklore specialist.
The ACC Summer Camp reinforces good vocal and instrumental musicianship skills in addition to stage presence in a collaborative setting. Dr. Sylvia Munsen, ACC Founder & Conductor serves as the director of the camp. Misty Renze, co-conductor of the ACC Chorale, is the co-conductor of the camp. Parent volunteers assisted with simple costuming and staging. In 2009, ACC is planning on presenting Life Goes On, a two-act opera, written and composed by singers in the Arizona Children’s Choir while Sylvia Munsen was the Artistic Director of that program.
